Diabetic Friendly Halloween Treat

Before I get into how I made this healthy Halloween treat, I want to mention that this post is not sponsored in any way. I purchased all of the ingredients at my local grocery store with my own money. I’m not associated with any of these companies, but I do purchase their products from time to time to create fun alternative diabetic friendly treats for my boyfriend who is a type 1 diabetic. I want to also mention that type 1 diabetics are not at all like type 2 diabetics. Type 2 diabetics are often caused by dietary choices, excess weight, and other issues with insulin resistance. Many take pills such as metformin to help with insulin resistance, but extreme cases might require insulin injections. Type 1 diabetes, on the other hand, is also known as juvenile diabetes and is caused by a less-than-functioning pancreas. This might mean that the type 1 diabetic has a pancreas that is only slightly functioning or not functioning at all which is why most require insulin. They did not choose this illness; they were born with it. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease because it’s caused by white blood cells recognizing the pancreas as a foreign entity in the body (for unknowns reasons) and attacking the pancreas until it’s almost dead or entirely non-functional. As with any illness, everyone is different.

Most diabetics, in general, can eat whatever they like in small quantities, but some type 2 diabetics may want to be careful with starchy and sugary foods while type 1 diabetics might want to avoid them simply because bolusing for every meal can be a pain. In these cases, sugar free options are great because they tend to be low-carb, require less insulin, or are a great treat to enjoy if you happen to be on a diet, trying to lose weight, etc. Of course, you don’t have to be a diabetic to enjoy this treat; I enjoyed it just fine. It tastes really delicious and it’s great if you want to avoid overdosing on sugar during the Halloween season.

Sugar Free Dirt Pudding Recipe

I used store bought products for this recipe, but you’re welcome to swap out any of these for homemade varieties or alternatives. It’s pretty versatile and interchangeable. I’m sure it will taste good in any version!

Ingredients:

  • Snack Pack Dark Chocolate Sugar Free Pudding (or any kind of pudding you like)
  • Sugar Free Cool Whip
  • Food Coloring
  • Oreos – I used the regular kind, but they also sell sugar free kinds if you prefer that.

Since the pudding was already made, I simply spooned some into a cute glass. In 2 smaller bowls, I put a little bit of cool whip into each. In one bowl of cool whip, I added 2 drops of blue and 2 drops of red into it to create a purple colored cool whip. In the other small bowl, I added 3 drops of green food coloring to the cool whip. Once the two colors were ready, I spooned a little of each cool whip color in between the chocolate pudding with oreo on top of each layer. Lastly, I topped off the entire thing with some crumbled bits of oreo. You could even put a whole oreo on top, if you like. The flavors are delicious together and it’s a great recipe for kids and adults alike.
